What is double elimination?
In a single elimination bracket, one loss and you're out. Double elimination is fairer — a player has to lose twice before being eliminated. Your first loss drops you from the winners bracket into the losers bracket, where you keep playing until either you lose again (elimination) or you fight your way back to the grand finals.
Winners bracket vs. losers bracket
- Winners bracket — the main bracket. Everyone starts here; a loss sends you to the losers bracket instead of eliminating you outright.
- Losers bracket — a second bracket that runs in parallel, feeding in players dropped from the winners bracket. Lose here and you're eliminated for good.
- Grand finals — the winners bracket champion faces the losers bracket champion. If the losers bracket player wins, a final "bracket reset" match is sometimes played since they've only lost once overall.
When should you use double elimination?
Double elimination is the standard for competitive events where a single bad match shouldn't end someone's run — fighting games, card game tournaments, and most esports events use it for exactly this reason. The tradeoff is time: with two brackets running, a double elimination tournament takes roughly 1.5–2x as many matches as single elimination for the same field size.
